Christmas time is here once again so CUE the holiday anxiety and the fear of falling off your health and fitness goals.
I get it, because I used to feel this way every Christmas and feel like I had to run and hide from all the dips, cookies, tarts, pies, truffles and wine. For years Christmas always brought on anxiety for me. I don’t know if it was all the people, all the food that I stressed about to resist, or the fact that family members would judge me for eating something bad since I went to school for nutrition. I like routine when it comes to workouts and eating well and I like my personal space so all the company drove me crazy too fuelling my anxiety.
I used to think that the ONLY way I could stay on track was to avoid all of the holiday goodies and workout every day of the holidays. Not true. I thought that eating one cookie = gaining 1 pound. Also not true and very unrealistic. This much stress was soooo necessary and annoying to carry around the holidays especially when I seen my family enjoying themselves and indulging and having a great time.
It is 110% possible to enjoy the holidays and everything it brings and STILL stay on track with your health and fitness goals. I know it seems impossible when theres snacks right, left and centre but if I can do it so can you. You just have to be a little mindful AND realistic.
Here are my TOP TIPS for staying fit and healthy during the holiday season, while still enjoying some balance and having a fantastic time with your family:
- Get moving with the fam! Go skating, go for a walk, go sledding, do something fun and active outside! Almost every year for Christmas me and my family make a rink on the ice or rent out the local arena and go skating. We organize a little 3 on 3 hockey game or if your like me and don’t play hockey you can just skate around and fall on your ass every 20 seconds. Thats fun too…. Not.
- Squeeze in a workout before the company floods in and festivites start. Please do this for the right reasons. Do it because you want to feel good and energized and because you want too, not because you want to burn off extra calories from the food your going to eat. Cause thats not a healthy mindset. During the holidays and spending time with my family, I don’t force myself to workout or “burn off food.” If I workout its because my body is telling me too to feel good and for my mental health. I enjoy the time I spend with my family and If I don’t get in a workout or just get in some walking or do a quick yoga video, I don’t obsess or stress over it.
- Make healthier christmas treats. Who says healthy stuff can’t taste amazing? A few posts ago I wrote about Christmas Edition Energy Balls that were festive, healthy and tasted amazing. Pinterest is a great resource for healthy holiday treats as well. Be Creative! Make healthier dips like guacamole with tomatoes instead of sour cream and mayo filled dips. Odds are your family will be intrigued as well and want to try your healthier alternatives. - Stay Hydrated. Especially if your indulging in some wine or other alcoholic beverages because you will easily become dehydrated and feel like crap. Drinking enough water throughout the holidays will help you flush out toxins, keep you feeling energized, and keeps your digestive tract moving which is important with the big, heavy meals at Christmas dinners.
- Eat Intuitively. Don’t stuff your face because you feel you have to and until your so full you feel like your going to be sick. That’s really hard on your digestive system and will cause you to feel sluggish and gross. Listen to your body and eat until your satisfied, if you want something sweet then have it, don’t beat yourself up about things you ate.
- Get in your veggies. Theres almost ALWAYS a few veggie dishes at Christmas dinners or holiday parties and I suggest you load up on those. Then your getting enough fibre and your body will happy with the vitamins, minerals and antioxidants preventing bloat and that sluggish feeling. The fibre in veggies will help you feel full longer preventing you from overeating. For me, my family always does some sort of salad, sweet potatoes, peas, carrots and brussel sprouts. I make sure my plate has plenty of those.
- Eat the damn truffle. This should be my new motto LOL. But seriously if you want a truffle, a cupcake, a piece of pie, WHATEVER your family has for treats, then have one, enjoy it and move on with your life. Like its Christmas, and you should be able to treat yourself without feeling guilty for it. Having a cheat meal or two will not back track all your progress I promise. Last Christmas my boyfriend was out for like a week and I didn’t workout once, I didn’t worry about meal prep or eating super healthy, I drank beer and watched hockey and just took time off. I was fairly active but in the end after loafing haardd the majority of the holiday I never gained any weight. So don’t fret!
